The issue of immigration is once again heating up. We’ll soon be hearing about how immigrants should “do things the right way” and “get in line.” And while I completely agree that immigrants should indeed get in line and follow the legal process for citizenship, as active and engaged citizens, we need to understand that that line really looks like.
Depending on an immigrants country of origin, the wait list to be considered for US citizenship can be extremely long, like tens of years long. This is largely due to immigration quotas and other regulations. Oh, and did I mention this is assuming the immigrant is skilled and/or educated? If an immigrant lacks education or is unskilled according to certain definitions, he or she might be out of luck entirely.
